The Rise Of Residential Polished Concrete Flooring

When you think of polished concrete, you would typically associate it with industrial flooring used in warehouses or factories, but this isn’t the case now.

In recent years, we have seen a boom in the number of requests for residential polished concrete floors in Florida homes, especially around the Palm Beach area, where we are local.

The Benefits Of Polished Concrete For Homeowners

Why Are Polished Residential Concrete Floors Becoming So Popular?

Clean and modern aesthetics are now on trend for many new homes in Florida. Homeowners are going for that industrial-chic look, which is likely why we are seeing polished flooring like concrete becoming so popular.

There’s been a shift towards using longer-lasting materials, too, for sustainability. Polished concrete is durable and customizable, plus, low maintenance, making it an ideal long-term investment.

Polished concrete flooring is created by grinding and polishing a concrete surface till it creates a smooth finish.

The Benefits Of Polished Concrete For Homeowners

  • It’s extremely durable – Polished flooring like concrete is perfect for busy households where there is lots of foot traffic or a vacation rental, since it’s resistant to scratching.
  • Eco-friendly – This material is sustainable and has minimal waste during installation, aligning with a shift towards sustainable homes.
  • Moisture resistant – It’s ideal for Florida’s humid environment since it doesn’t warp like wood or swell once it is sealed. Be aware that you must seal polished concrete to make it moisture resistant.
  • Little maintenance – No special chemicals are needed to maintain this polished concrete, just your usual mopping and sweeping.

Where Can You Use Polished Concrete?

Polished residential concrete floors can be used for a variety of rooms, it’s a versatile material that suits nearly any type of room since it can be tinted to different colors and made to be glossy or matt depending on your preference.

Some common places we see polished concrete installed are –

  • Living rooms.
  • Kitchens.
  • Hallways.
  • Bathrooms.
  • Patios.

 For Kitchens

Polished concrete is perfect for kitchens since it is resistant to spills and stains and is super easy to clean. It works well in modern-looking industrial kitchens or open-plan light homes.

This material is also very hygienic since it is smooth with no grout lines to trap bacteria from fallen food and liquids. The main disadvantage is that it can feel hard under the feet and cold, but this is ideal during the summer months.

For Bedrooms

Paired with soft rugs and a sophisticated modern design, polished concrete can look exceptionally good in bedrooms and help keep your bedroom cool in the hotter months. This flooring could cause echoing, but adding rugs and other textiles in the room should mitigate this.

For Bathrooms

Polished concrete is non-porous and slip-resistant when it is sealed. Therefore, it’s ideal for bathrooms, especially in a humid climate like Florida. Once again, it may feel cold under the feet, so it isn’t suited to very cold climates.

How Long Does Polished Concrete Last?

Polished concrete really is one of the most durable flooring options out there for your home in Palm Beach. It can last up to 20 years and longer, holding up without chips or scratching, especially once sealed.

It’s an ideal long-term investment, especially for vacation rentals, since it’s so durable.

Is Polished Concrete Flooring Expensive?

The price of polished concrete flooring is variable according to the type you choose, such as cream polish, salt and pepper, or other decorative patterns. It also changes according to the finish, whether you want glossy or matte, and if you need it tinted. It could be anywhere from $3 to $9 per square foot.

Polished concrete can be expensive to install, but it typically saves you money in the long run since it lasts much longer than other types of flooring.
